Escondido Beach

A little under four miles west of Malibu Canyon Road, before Kanan-Dume Road, is Escondido Beach Road, a left turn across PCH if you are facing west, on the west side of Escondido Creek. This small, private street runs parallel to the beach as PCH climbs the hill to the top of the bluff and heads toward the Pt. Dume area. Geoffrey's Malibu restaurant is on the top of the bluff, over this street.

Escondido means "hidden" in Spanish and that is the feeling you get on the narrow street. But while there is little traffic or noise on the dead-end Escondido Beach Road itself, you do hear noise from PCH above, less so as you go further away from the PCH intersection.

Homes here are relatively large for the beach, some built as early as the 1940s and 1950s. Many have been upgraded in recent years or even enlarged by combining adjacent lots. The homes are attractive and well designed, filling each lot edge to edge to maximize use of the beach frontage. From the street you see little but garages, blank walls or covered windows as is typical for beach homes along PCH. The beauty of the homes is best appreciated from the beach side, where the homes are built to open directly onto the beach, a few steps down. Above Escondido Beach Road, there is another row of homes on the south side of PCH that have beach access by stairways that lead down the bluff.

There is a public access gate for the beach on the east side of Escondido Creek and a second access by a steep stairway just west of Geoffrey's between 27400 and 27420 PCH. The waters here are noted for diving, with reefs and a kelp forest relatively close to shore, the habitat of giant black sea bass and giant kelpfish. There is a white shark pen off-shore maintained by the Monterey Bay Aquarium. Kayaking is also popular here along with fishing from the beach. Non-resident parking is not permitted on the private street. The beach is typically narrow but with good sand.
